Christianity and Me

LSD Society Index

Kevin Jing Qiu, November 19, 2004

I. Introduction
I have been learning about Bible and Christianity for over a year. The only connection I have with Christianity before I came here is probably with my Christian maternal grandmother. After I came here, by coincidence I get to know some Christians, and by attending Bible studies and conducting personal readings, I learned more about God. Therefore, tonight I want to talk about Christianity and me.

II. Development
Atheism and Communism
Like many of you, I was brought up in a society where antheism and communism are the dominant ideology.

1. Atheism
As a child, we tend to see religion as a "fancy" superstition. I still remember we are taught that religion will no longer exist when communism comes into place. The existence of religions is totally necessary for some people to explain the unknown at the moment. But ultimately science will explain everything.

I never thought seriously about religions; simply because they don't seem to concern me that much. Our education is also more focused on science. Talking about religion is considered to be "mind-controlled". But for me, first of all, atheism never works on me. Human beings are vulnerable. The pain of birth, growth and death and the power of nature, all make us see how tiny we are. I thought there must be some ultimately powerful figure there, who controls everything. Besides, I don't think there're real atheists. I heard about terrible events happened in our country back in the 60s and 70s. People were really mind-controlled by some person, and hailed him as a god. Communism is practically the state religion of the time.

2. Communism
In our education, we were taught how communists prevailed over the capitalists in our country and saved our people blah blah blah. In communism society we get what we need and we work following our bliss. But look at the reality, most communist governments are running on anti-communism policies. Those who don't are suffering and living hells for their people.

As my communism ideal is in question, when I learned about Christianity, I asked myself, is this the way?

Christianity
3. Sin
One of the reason why communism doesn't work out is because human beings are sinners. Greed and desire are the essential enemies of communism ideology. Although the word "sinner" is a strong word in today's context like "convict", "outlaw", or "criminal". Most of us are not "sinners" under the government's law but we are all sinners under God's law. It's not because we sin, therefore we're sinners. It's because we are sinners, therefore we sin.

4. Karma and Repentance
What to do about our sins? As a child, I believed I have to do good deeds to have a good "next life", which is Karma, influenced by Buddhism. With Christianity, because men are sinners, we need to face our own sins and repent. You could be a thief, a murderer, or a pervert, but the moment you believed in Jesus Christ and repent yourself, your sins are forgiven and you are saved from eternal death. There's no "next life" in Christianity. Everyone has only one life and after physical death, one will either goto heaven and live forever along with God or goto hell and be burned in the lake of fire.

5. Fear of God
The problem with our society now is that people have no fear of God. I consider myself lucky to be born in a family with educated, responsible parents, which helped me build up my moral system. But in general, the society is falling. Mammonism is seen everywhere. Because there's no fear of God, people are trying whatever they can to satisfy their desires. Because there's no fear of God, moral standards are mutable. Things that were considered immoral are gradually being mundane now. It's crucial that the standard shouldn't be made up by human.

III. Wrapping-up: Reveal
The above are some of the points I learned in Christianity in connection with my background. I may appear stubborn, but deep down my heart I am willing to believe there's a God who is our Creator and Savior; a God that will smash my old life away, and give me a second birth. I may appear prideful, but deep down my heart I am humble and eager to hear the sound from the heavens; a sound that will wake me up and make me pure. However, the reality discourages me: people do not get what they deserve. Sins are not cursed, traditions are collapsing, and moral standards are corrupted. So I ask God to look at this mess, show yourself in front of your creations. By power vanquish your foes and by love bring lost sheep back to your herd! As Martin Luther King said, let the glory of the Lord be revealed and every flesh should see it together!
